Topic1Campus-Wide IT Governance

Setting up formal IT governance on campus was a major recommendation coming out of the provost-sponsored 2017 campus-wide IT review. The new IT Governance Council (ITGC) is a governing body that directs and oversees the approval and prioritization of all IT projects on campus. This is a major step forward for enabling more efficient and effective IT service delivery on campus.

6 The number of high-impact campus IT projects approved by the ITGC in 2018

Benefits of the ITGC include campus-wide perspective on IT investments, improved efficiency, reduced duplication of effort, creation of integrated technologies, formal approval and prioritization process, and improved IT focus on the academic mission of the University.

There are four sub-committees of the ITGC that oversee specialized IT projects and investment, with the ITGC having the final decision-making authority. They are:

  • Academic Technologies Advisory Council
  • Cyber Security Governance Council
  • Data Advisory Committee
  • Research Computing Advisory Board

The first major outcome of the newly-formed ITGC was the approval of six high-impact campus IT projects in 2018. These include:

  • Data Centre Physical Upgrades
  • Human Resources Management System
  • Institutional Data Strategy
  • Integrated Research Information System
  • Student Evaluation for Teaching and Courses
  • Student Information System Refresh

Many of these projects are well underway and further information can be found in the ITGC-Approved Projects section of this report.

With institution-wide oversight and well-established prioritization and approval processes in place, U of G is now poised to see increased benefit related to IT investment on campus.
