Topic8Better Student Information Systems = Better Student Experience
In partnership with the Office of Registrarial Services, CCS continues to invest in the modernization of student-focused areas within Colleague – U of G’s student information system (SIS). Some very hard work this year by both teams aimed to improve how students engage with Colleague.
With support from CCS, the Registrar team successfully implemented net tuition billing, which provides clarity for students in terms of fees owing once student aid is supplied. In addition, an enhanced course selection process provides students with a more workable registration window, considering the number of credits completed and allowing for priority to be given to certain students, such as those who require specific courses to graduate, or varsity athletes in order to optimize practice and game schedules.
These ongoing changes will continue to enhance the student and staff experience at U of G, with more user-friendly, intuitive systems and a more personalized approach for mapping the student journey.
In addition, a major SIS server migration took place in June 2018, prior to the new registration process. The Registrar and CCS Enterprise Applications SIS teams planned this highly complex project for months and worked all through migration weekend, resulting in a highly successful outcome. Managers provided meals and inspiration, had hats made for the whole team and a cake celebration to celebrate the success and tremendous hard work!
Another upcoming improvement will be the addition of a student planning module in Colleague. This will build on the improved student finance module implemented in 2017, and will allow students to forecast courses in advance, map courses to degrees, and visualize “what if?” scenarios related to program changes.
These ongoing changes will continue to enhance the student and staff experience at U of G, with more user-friendly, intuitive systems and a more personalized approach for mapping the student journey.
This project was approved by the U of G IT Governance Committee (ITGC). For more information on the ITGC, please refer to the Governance + Strategy section of this annual report.
