Improving Life

Topic1Completion of Multi-year WiFi Expansion

Beginning with the residence WiFi expansion in the summer of 2016, CCS has been dedicated to providing fast and reliable wireless network connections for students, staff and faculty alike, wherever they may be. At the project’s inception, there were just 920 access points deployed across the entire campus. Today, there are more than 3,500 – essentially a quadrupling of our campus WiFi network.

The Residence WiFi Expansion involved the addition of more than 1,700 wireless access points to all residence rooms as well as common areas in residence. In 2017, the project expanded to install another 1,800 access points in 53 buildings on the main campus that had either no WiFi or limited coverage.

With the explosion of mobile devices in the last decade, and the average university student spending four or more hours online every day, as well as wireless collaboration requirements for faculty and staff, this was a critical investment to make in our infrastructure, and in our campus community. CCS will continue to tweak and optimize WiFi on an ongoing basis, depending on the ever-changing building and access requirements.
