Topic5Beyond Hard Drives: A New Model for Safer Research Data

Purchasing the right storage for your data is not a straightforward decision, with data loss prevention being an important consideration. University staff, faculty and researchers storing sensitive and important data in their environments may purchase consumer-grade hard drives but be unaware that these will fail within a few years, meaning that a researcher could lose years of data in an instant. An alternative to this is to purchase enterprise-class storage from CCS, which has multiple protections against failure and thus better protects against data loss, however the cost of enterprise-class storage is often prohibitive.

Secondary storage offers far greater reliability compared with consumer-grade hard drives, at 1/10 the cost of enterprise-class storage.

To fill this gap in service, CCS is now offering a Secondary Storage service – a hybrid model between consumer-grade hard drive and enterprise-class storage – which provides a great option for those who need to safely store large amounts of data at a lower cost. It offers far greater reliability compared with consumer-grade hard drives, at 1/10 the cost of enterprise-class storage. There are a number of clients across campus already utilizing this new service, enjoying the lower cost, improved protection, and peace of mind.
